On Thursday I heard Bill Bushaw report Gallup pollings on the question of whether Americans are ready to change their schools. Public support for NCLB has fallen dramatically since 2003, post-secondary education is becoming much more important, and there is widespread agreement that for schools to improve the quality of teachers needs to improve.
Bushaw called for a transformational dialogue based on four key areas:
Redefine purpose of education away from “sort and select”
Recognize that information is ubiquitous but that thoughtfully applying it is not
Shift focus of teaching toward engagement
Question school structure; replace schools with schooling
Sounds sensible to me.
Great idea, these really are the areas that need attention.
